Simon Burgess unveiled as Editor-in-Chief for Malaysia’s premier men’s magazine brand

September 30, 2015

Mongoose Publishing today revealed that Simon Burgess is to be the new Editor-in-Chief of Esquire Malaysia.

Burgess will be familiar to Malaysian magazine audiences here having worked across various titles in the country for over a decade, securing the award for Magazine of the Year in 2010 and 2011 while Editor of FHM Malaysia.

His experience includes M2, EPL, FourFourTwo, where he oversaw an increase in copy sales of over 200% and introduced a strong social media presence, and FHM. At the latter, in addition to numerous national awards, Burgess increased copy sales by 500%, built the most liked Facebook page for a men’s magazine at the time, grew advertising partnerships and revenue, and delivered a magazine rated among the best international editions of the global brand.

At Esquire Malaysia, Simon will helm a team responsible for creating one of the most critically acclaimed magazines in Malaysia. Esquire is firmly established as the most intelligent, engaging publication for stylish, successful and influential men in the country.

In 2014, Esquire Malaysia beat out over 530 competitors from 17 countries to win the Gold Award for Best Magazine Cover for its “Brilliant Malaysians” issues, and Silver Award for Best Overall Magazine Design, at the WAN-IFRA Asian Media Awards, accolades owing much to the publication’s outstanding design team led by Art Director, Rebecca Chew. The magazine also claimed eight Magazine Publisher’s Association (MPA) Awards in 2014, more than any other individual magazine in Malaysia.

“I’m proud and delighted to be joining Esquire Malaysia. Esquire has proven itself to be the strongest men’s magazine in the world and has an amazing and enviable heritage,” says Simon Burgess after learning of his appointment.

“The team has already won numerous national and international awards for its excellence in journalism and design, and I’m confident that together we can drive the title to new heights.”

Burgess will be stepping into the role following the departure of former Editor-in-Chief Sam Coleman earlier this year. Since Coleman’s departure, the position of Acting Editor-in–Chief has been performed admirably by renowned writer and director Kam Raslan. Raslan produced high quality issues including original, ground-breaking features on Malaysia’s involvement in the real-life events depicted in the movie ‘Black Hawk Down’, plus his issues included interviews with Paul McCartney, Daniel Craig, and a Malaysian exclusive interview with Tommy Hilfiger, plus an in-depth report on the state of the Malaysian film industry.

Raslan will continue in the position of Acting Editor-in-Chief until Burgess begins his new role from November 23, 2015.

“We are delighted to welcome Simon to Mongoose. He will be a brilliant Editor-in-Chief for a fantastic magazine,” said Lynette Ow, Mongoose’s Editorial Director, to whom Burgess will report.

“It was a long, demanding and rigorous process to secure the best Editor-in-Chief for this role and in Simon we have done that. His strengths in journalism, understanding commercial partnerships, attracting readers and especially in digital media made him the stand-out candidate in our eyes.

“We’re very excited about the future of Esquire Malaysia under Simon’s guiding hand, which will see the title grow in prominence and audience, both in print and online.”
