Esquire Malaysia’s Movember Movement

30 November 2013, Kuala Lumpur: Esquire Malaysia’s Movember Movement, the month when men are encouraged to grow facial hair during the month of November to raise awareness for men’s cancers, raised one of the largest charitable amounts for the cause. Now in its second year, the movement raised RM100,000 for The National Cancer Society of Malaysia, using its Movember Ambassadors as well as A-list celebrity females for a star studded shave off event on November 30.

Esquire Malaysia was assisted by Ben Yong of the Big Group, Joseph Teoh and Antoine Bakhache of Truefitt & Hill who were committee members, and worked together for the campaign as well as served as sponsors. The Movember Ambassadors for 2013 included local celebrities like Azlan Iskandar; Bobby Ting; Carl Graham; Fairuz Hamzah; Jonathan Putra; Joseph Afaki; Josiah Mizukami; Juarez Lowe; Marcus Chan; Mitchell Bacha; Raj Aria; Saw Teong Hin; Shazlan Sufian; Shazrik Din; Sonny San; Tengku Mac Bakar; TTFGA Ridduan Ismail; Wak Doyok and Will Quah.

The Movember Ambassadors campaigned on social media by sharing pictures of themselves (tagging it #MyEsqMo), raising awareness about men’s health and securing pledges from friends and family, 100 percent of which were given to The National Cancer Society of Malaysia.

The month long campaign culminated in the Final Shave-Off at the prestigious Truefitt & Hill outlet at Bangsar Shopping Centre where our Movember Babes Amber Chia, Andrea Fonseka, Deborah Henry, Debbie Goh, Danielle Graham, Thanuja Ananthan, Patricia Knudsen, Stephanie Chai and Xandria Ooi shaved our Movember Ambassadors.

While guests waited for a shave, they chatted with Will Quah, the Emcee for the evening and enjoyed canapés by Ben’s restaurant and Glenmorangie whiskey. As soon as the shaving was concluded, everybody moved up to the yet-to-be-opened, membership-only bar Mr. Brooks. There, prizes were awarded to four of our most outstanding ambassadors. The ‘Stache with the Most Cash Award was given to Bobby Ting, Managing Director, Hydro-Icon who raised RM60,000! Josef Afaki, Managing Director of The Eatertainment Group won the second prize for the ‘Stache with the Most Cash while Wak Doyok of The Garment won the Most Social ‘Stache and Carl Graham, Creative Director of RollModels won the Award for the Bravest Ambassador (Patricia Knudsen did manage to draw some blood!). Prizes awarded during the evening included a Hugo Boss suit, two Hackett London blazers and a plethora of products from Truefitt & Hill. The night ended with a cheque presentation to NCSM, as DJ Rudy La Faber grooved the night away.

Sam Coleman, the Editor-in-Chief of Esquire Malaysia was very happy with the campaign. “It’s amazing, I’m absolutely stunned by how much the guys raised and how much awareness was drawn from it all. This is a very different approach than most philanthropy projects in that it wasn’t a fancy ball or auction but rather guys who asked their friends to pledge money if they grew their moustaches and beards. The committee members, the mo bros and mo sistahs all gave a massive amount of time and effort to make this success happen, especially Bobby Ting for raising RM60,000.. Next year we’ll raise even more,” he said enthusiastically. “The response this year goes to show people’s willingness to spread awareness about men’s health and motivates us to make it even bigger and better in 2014”.

The funds raised via the Esquire Malaysia’s Movember Movement were in aid of The National Cancer Society of Malaysia who will be using it to fund research and early detection outreach programs for men related cancers.
