Time Out KL comes out Coolest at
MPA Awards 2009
Time Out Kuala Lumpur, the city’s top events and entertainment listings magazine, yesterday was honoured when it won both Gold and Silver awards in the Entertainment category of the Magazine Publisher’s Association Awards 2009.
With a silver for the ‘Cheap Issue’ (a cement floor graffiti-d with the words ‘This mag will save you $$’) and gold for the launch ‘So How Cool is KL?’ cover that featured celebrated underground blogger and socialite Joyce ‘The Fairy’ Wong iced up and placed in a freezer, Time Out KL achieved a remarkable double.
The Magazine Publisher’s Association, Malaysia – the representative body for the magazine industry in this country – revealed the winners of the 2009 MPA Awards, honouring the very best in magazine front covers, in front of a packed house at PJ Live Arts Centre, Jaya One.
In a ceremony attended by the good and great of the magazine and media industry, the MPA revealed 36 winners across five categories in three languages. There had been a record 108 entries in this year’s MPA Awards. The categories were Women’s, Lifestyle, General, Entertainment and Niche, with winners of Gold, Silver and Bronze awards in Bahasa Malaysia, English and Chinese.
Judging was fierce, with seven of the country’s most experienced, intelligent creative minds asked to pass judgement and only one winner was selected for each award per category.
Mongoose Editorial Director Matt Bellotti was understandably delighted. “It’s such an honour. These are the showpiece awards for the magazine industry in Malaysia, so to pick up not only an award but the top two in our field is wonderful.”
The Organising Chairman of the MPA Awards 2009, Mr Louis Foo of Measat Publications Sdn Bhd said, “The judges sat for a full day of rigourous debate, arguing strongly about which magazine deserved to be rewarded with a Gold, Silver or Bronze.”
Bellotti continued, “The graffiti cover was one of our best-selling of the year. It’s an issue that really resonates with KL-ites, especially given the tough financial situation we have been in for the past year or so.”
“Meanwhile the “How Cool is KL?” (April 2008) cover has easily been our most talked about and best received. We chose Joyce Wong for the shoot as she represents the cool, underground youth of Malaysia, the cutting edge if you like. She was amazing and the look in her eyes for that image makes the shot. It was a superb shoot and I’m delighted the judges agreed. For further proof of how successful this front cover is, it won the Best Front Cover in the World award at the Time Out International conference in 2008, and has been copied by Time Out magazines in three other cities around the world.”
Mongoose, the publisher’s of Time Out Kuala Lumpur have been in Malaysia for 13 years and strive to uphold the best in editorial practice, whether it is, as in this case, award-winning design, or cutting edge, quality independent journalism. Mongoose are the fastest growing publishers in Malaysia, with four new publications in 2009 and even more planned in 2010.
