‘Broke In KL’ story honoured for editorial excellence

June 11 2014, Hong Kong – In a room full of publishing industry heavyweights, Time Out Kuala Lumpur (TOKL) received international recognition from The Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) for Excellence in Lifestyle Coverage for its ‘Broke In KL’ cover story featured in its March 2013 issue.

Held yearly, the SOPA Awards honours editorial excellence in the publishing industry. A group of high-calibre international judges from many of the region’s leading newspapers as well as consumer and trade magazines and academics from prestigious universities preside over the award entries to come up with a list of winners in 18 categories.

The ‘Broke In KL’ cover story that received an honourable mention under the Excellence in Lifestyle Coverage category is a report on how to experience the city on a cheap and cheerful budget. It includes features such as ‘How To Survive On RM150 A Week’, ‘The Best Happy Hours In Town’, ‘How To Make More Money And Score Free Things’, and ‘How To Shop For Under RM100’ – all filled with practical information on living in and enjoying Kuala Lumpur without breaking the bank, presented in a creative-but-digestible format.

The SOPA Awards set a valuable benchmark for the industry and have become news items in their own right, generating media coverage and attention not only across

the Asia-Pacific region, but also on the global arena. It is an honour for TOKL to receive an award on the same night as other category winners such as The International New York Times, The Wall Street Journal Asia, Bloomberg News and Reuters.
