19 January 2017

It has been a busy start to the year for Mongoose Media with the appointment of two new Editors-in-Chief within the company this week.

Jason Tan has been appointed Editor-in-Chief for Esquire Malaysia effective on 17 January 2017.  A figurehead of journalism and media in Malaysia, Jason has an impressive media portfolio spanning over 20 years.

Following his stint at Men’s Review, Malaysia’s first English Language men’s magazine title in 1996, Jason subsequently moved to The Edge Communications in 2000 and was the Editor of ‘Off the Edge’ from 2005 to 2010.  2011 saw Jason move to be Editor of web portal Komunitikini and later Editor and Producer of tablet magazine ‘The B-Side’ which encompassed culture, lifestyle and politics.  Launched in October 2012, it timed to deliver a unique experience to the reader, it was considered among the first of its kind in the world.  Jason’s portfolio later included experience across property with ‘The Edge Property’.

Bringing together this experience and talent, at Esquire Malaysia, Jason will lead a team responsible for creating one of the most critically acclaimed magazines in Malaysia.  Esquire Malaysia boasts a distribution of over 25,000 copies per month and continues to record double-digit audience growth online.

The publication has been an indispensable resource for generations of curious and confident men, defining and redefining what it means to be man at his best. From fashion and entertainment to technology and travel, Esquire’s legacy of style and substance continues to inform and inspire what every man ought to know.

The role of Editor-in-Chief at Esquire Malaysia was left open in December following an internal shift by its former Editor-in-Chief, Simon Burgess to Mongoose Media’s homegrown title Expatriate Lifestyle.

Unfortunately after only a brief stint as Editor-in-Chief there, Simon has had to return to the UK for personal reasons.  In his place existing Editor-in-Chief of Time Out Malaysia, Caramella Scarpa will add Editor-in-Chief of Expatriate Lifestyle to her portfolio.

Caramella joined Mongoose Media in 2016 as editor of Time Out Malaysia covering multiple titles: Time Out Malaysia Kids, Time Out Malaysia Eating & Drinking guide, Time Out Penang guide and Time Out Malaysia for Visitors Guide.  The dual role will see Caramella managing editorial and design teams for both Time Out Malaysia and Expatriate Lifestyle.

Prior to joining the Mongoose family, Caramella worked in PR focusing on clients in the hospitality and education sectors and has worked in copywriting and as a writer amassing 17 years of experience.

Both Caramella and Jason will report into Editorial Director, Muna Noor.  Of the appointments Muna said, “The dual role for Caramella is as much a strategic decision for Mongoose Media, as the company moves to position its best persons where they are of greatest value and maximize team knowledge and expertise across multiple titles and platforms. I’m very excited about the editorial strength Jason and Caramella bring with them and the energy and ideas that they are already channeling into producing engaging content that is indispensable to their respective audiences.  This includes our digital offerings, which we are developing and growing to match the changes in reading behavior and and advertising trends that Malaysia is experiencing.

Patrick Brennan, Group CEO of Mongoose Media said, “We are delighted to welcome Jason Tan to the Esquire team and are thrilled to have someone of his caliber leading the Esquire brand at this exciting juncture in its development. Everyone at Mongoose is very sorry to be losing Simon Burgess but we all wish him and his family the very best for the future in the UK. At the same time, we have exciting plans for Expatriate Lifestyle and I can’t think of anyone more qualified than Caramella, who has done an outstanding job with Time Out Kids and Time Out Malaysia Guides, to lead the team in forging a new direction for the Expatriate Lifestyle brand.”
