Esquire magazine announces Malaysia’s Best Dressed Real Man for 2013

October 31 2013, Kuala Lumpur: After three months of Esquire Malaysia’s “Best Dressed Man Malaysia” (#BDRMMY) competition, one that saw over 200 entrants bear the full weight of a panel of fashion experts, winners were announced in dramatic style at KL’s hottest new venue, Play at The Roof. With prizes totaling over RM65,000, competition was keenly contested and the final decision agonized over by the expert panel. Fauriz Ramdan, local fashion designer, won the top prize with Azmir Hamzah, Nicholas Mak, Nabil Hatta and Andre Amir as the following winners.

This is the third year of Esquire Malaysia’s Best Dressed Real Man, a Malaysian take on popular Esquire Netherlands’ “Best Dressed Real Man”. The contestants are scouted for at road shows or send their pictures looking stylish and fashionable to be critiqued by a panel of judges. They were then invited to come to two judging evenings where they were interviewed by the judges, at the exclusive Sacoor Brothers outlet in Pavilion and at Chyna Black. The esteemed experts making the tough decisions were: Sam Coleman - Editor in Chief Esquire Malaysia & Esquire Singapore; Jason Lim–Associate Fashion Editor Esquire Malaysia; Jiman Casablancas– PR Consultant and Writer; Silas Liew–Malaysian Fashion Designer; Kuah Jenhan–Comedian and Roslan Said–The winner of Malaysia’s Best Dressed Real Man in 2012.

In total, the judges assessed over 200 entrants based on merit and personal style. “It was an amazing turn out. I was really impressed by the level of fashion knowledge and confidence. It bodes well for the development of men’s fashion in Malaysia, something that Esquire is championing as the foremost men’s fashion and lifestyle title,” said Sam Coleman.

Prizes on offer for the winners included: bespoke tailored suits and clothing by Portugese fashion label Sacoor Brothers, perfumes by Acqua Di Parma, Rado D-Star Chronographs and holidays courtesy of Alila Hotel and Resorts, Bali. In addition, all five of those to reach the final shortlist, from which the eventual winner was be chosen, were the subjects of a photoshoot that appears in the November 2012 issue of Esquire Malaysia.

For the grand finale and the reveal of the Best Dressed Real Man 2013, the guests partied at KL’s hottest new venue The Roof, a day before its official opening. The guests had a great time sipping on Kronenbourg K1664 and snacking on canapés by The Roof while the emcee of the evening Sarimah Ibrahim entertained the crowd.

Malaysia’s Best Dressed Real Men 2013 – REVEALED

Fairuz Ramdan: 32, fashion designer was crowned as Malaysia’s Best Dressed Real Man 2013 and received bespoke suits and clothing from Sacoor Brothers, Acqua Di Parma perfume, Rado D-Star Chronographs and holiday courtesy of Alila Hotel and Resorts, Bali. "As a menswear designer, Fairuz knows to dress well. I like his quirky style, which sets him apart from the other guys."—Roslan Said, 2012 Esquire Malaysia Best Dressed Real Man

Azmir Hamzah: 26, retail supervisor was the first runner up and received bespoke suits and clothing from Sacoor Brothers, Acqua Di Parma perfume, a Rado watch and holiday courtesy of Alila Hotel and Resorts, Bali. "Clean-cut, simple, well-made. Azmir's look isn't overwrought with unnecessary flourishes—his focus on quality and fit allows the clothes to speak for themselves. There are no overt brandings or hugely recognisable silhouettes that scream 'fashion victim', proving that less is indeed more."—Jason Lim, Esquire Malaysia associate fashion editor

Nicholas Mak: 25, photographer was the second runner up and received bespoke clothing from Sacoor Brothers, Acqua Di Parma perfume, a Rado watch and holiday courtesy of Alila Hotel and Resorts, Bali. "Well-groomed, well-dressed and well-built, Nick is as comfortable holding it down in a perfectly tailored suit as he is in rock 'n' roll-inspired denim gear. Storming into the KL style scene this year with so much enthusiasm, his knack for fashion has definitely earned him the reputation as one to look out for. Not just a pretty face, this."—Jiman Casablancas, PR consultant and writer

Nabil Hatta: 28, oil & gas legal officer was given an honorary mention and received bespoke clothing by Sacoor Brothers and Acqua Di Parma perfume. "Nabil gave us insights into aspects of bespoke tailoring through his experience and with a particular Italian flair, or as he puts it, sprezzatura. Citing menswear heroes the Ricci brothers—creators of Sciamat—as inspiration, he has an intense proclivity for a roped shoulder and, even more so, the desire to intimidate and overpower. You could call his bluff, but a man who turns up to work in a suit, such as Nabil, is a man who will get the job done."—Silas Liew, fashion designer

Andre Amir: 33, brand consultant was given an honorary mention and received bespoke clothing by Sacoor Brothers and Acqua Di Parma perfume."Andre is so personable. He is comfortable yet confident in what he wears and I believe that's what makes a gentleman. That's how you wear the most important part of your outfit—personality."—Kuah Jenhan, comedian

“A very important aspect we want to convey is that style is not about money: it’s simply the best of what every man can afford, imagination and—most importantly—attitude,” concluded Coleman, rightly proud of a contest that got Malaysia talking and caring more about men’s style.
